A walking path in a small forest preserve near my home winds through an old oak-hickory woods. Most of the trees growing along the trail are red oaks, their leaves already turning scarlet after the first hard freeze of late autumn. Silver Maples and Choke Cherry have lost some of their foliage and the leaves litter the path.

It is late in the day, almost dusk and the setting sun tints the sky in a rosy pink. The bare limbs and tree trunks take on a deep burgundy. Tall goldenrod bends over a path that draws you slowly onward into the sunset.

The moment passes all too quickly, but I have preserved it for you in this plein aire painting.
