The sixteen-sided Teeple Barn was a true landmark in the county where I live. Visible from many angles, including an Illinois toll way, I have watched development slowly take over the surrounding farm land, until this unique structure became the last barn visible for miles. It was included in a National Geographic publication Saving America’s Treasures. Sadly, just before Memorial Day 2007, high winds finally had their way with this wonderful old building. It virtually collapsed in upon itself, with the newly restored cupola, the only surviving piece that came down intact. I have painted and drawn the Teeple Barn for many years, in all seasons, and in many stages of efforts to restore it. This painting shows the restored cupola, the lake, and surrounding trees in the summer. To me, this barn has always symbolized a vanishing landscape and life style, the single family farming a few acres of corn and soybeans with a small dairy herd or some beef cattle. I will miss those farms when at last they are gone from this area, but they live on in my paintings of Heartland Images. Many art collectors who have purchased my paintings and drawings of the Teeple Barn have told me this: “Suzanne, having this painting on my wall was like opening a window into another world. It has a light of its own. I am always looking at it.” One lady told me she had placed the barn painting where she could look at it while having her morning coffee. This kind of praise feeds my artist’s soul! Landmark Barn at the Pond should find a good home with an art collector who loves those windows into another world.
