A country lane, a winding entrance to a farmstead no longer there, a service road to a barn long gone; I never knew the history of this wonderful scene. It was near where I live. I passed it regularly driving into town two miles away. I have painted it small and large, in the fall, winter, spring, and summer. This is the summer view, green and yellow, with trees leaved out, throwing shadows across the roadway, tall grasses and prairie flowers blowing in the wind.
All my paintings in the Heartland Images series I consider windows into another world. Certainly this is true of Last Road North, because this spring, a devastating view greeted me as I drove my usual route into town. Bulldozers were carving a new sub-development into that rural area. The little winding lane was gone. I couldn’t even tell where it had been. I believe my paintings of this scene are meant to preserve a view of this rural area that is quickly disappearing. For those collectors of art who want a window into a peaceful and serene world, I painted this for you.
